By now, you’ve probably heard of PRP treatments. Celebrities and influencers alike have made these seemingly ‘gory’ treatments Insta-famous and shared all the details either on their tv-shows or social media pages. Despite the bloody coverage, PRP which is short for Platelet Rich Plasma, is an effective treatment used by doctors to treat everything from hair loss, ageing, sports injuries, musculoskeletal problems to aesthetic concerns. PRP is derived from a patient’s own blood which is placed in a centrifuge which separates the plasma from the blood. The plasma is then injected or needled into the wound, skin or problem area. The growth factors in the PRP then start to speed up the necessary healing.
What does the research say?
Given that PRP is such a well-known and requested treatment, researchers and doctors have put it to the test over the years. Let’s look at some of their findings:
One review by researchers at Stanford University1 found that there’s amounting high-quality evidence to support the use of PRP injections for tennis elbow and osteoarthritis of the knee. They also found a moderate amount of high-quality evidence to support the use of PRP for the treatment of tendinitis. However, they suggested more high-quality clinical trials are required to assess the effectiveness of PRP for other conditions such as rotator cuff tendinopathy, osteoarthritis of the hip, or high ankle sprains.
Another review in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal2 assessed the use of PRP in aesthetic and regenerative medicine. The therapeutic applications of PRP were applied to wound healing, skin and facial rejuvenation, hair restoration, hand rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and musculoskeletal regeneration. The study concluded that PRP treatments are showing a lot of promise as a means of safe and efficient cosmetic intervention. But once again, more high-quality clinical studies are required to better and expand our understanding of PRP treatments’ limitations and benefits in aesthetics.
High-Quality Studies Require High-Quality PRP
Not all PRP systems/devices are created equal. If we want to improve the quality of the studies and most importantly the results, doctors will have to use high-quality PRP devices. This can only be done by using the best technology available to us today. The Arthrex® Double Syringe System allows for superior personal cell therapy that’s of the highest quality and delivers results whether it’s used in aesthetics or regenerative therapy.
The unique double designed syringe from Arthrex® allows for closed and easy production of PRP and no synthetic separating materials are required as it’s a purely physical process. This innovative PRP system from Arthrex® is easy to use and has proven efficacy without compromising safety or quality.
The added benefits of the Arthrex® Double Syringe System is that it’s extremely safe – the whole procedure is closed, and no needles are required to prevent infections or needle-stick injuries. It’s easy and user-friendly, eliminating incorrect use or any additional problems. The Double Syringe System is a cost-effective method for concentrating growth factors for therapeutic use. It’s quick and requires only a few minutes to produce the plasma, whereas with traditional systems it can take up to 45 minutes to process the blood into plasma for application. This delays treatment and increases the cost of the procedure. Finally, Arthrex® is a global leader in the manufacturing of medical devices so you can rest assured that the highest quality measures were applied during manufacturing to ensure the best treatment.
