Break-Up with Break-Outs
A break-out can seriously get in the way of beautiful skin. Clear, pimple-free skin is something we all dream of having, so when you wake up with a big, red, angry pimple -or two- it’s a nightmare come true. Often, we think that break-outs only happen during those awkward teenage years when our hormones are out of balance. And while hormones do play a big part in our skin health, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and inflammatory pimples, can also be the result of poor diet, stress, bacteria and the wrong skincare regime.
The occurrence of both comedones and inflammatory pimples can be improved by using the right skincare products. The products should be formulated with ingredients that gently exfoliate the surface of the skin to prevent build up which leads to break-outs, while the other ingredients should penetrate the pores and break down the ‘plugs’ that cause blackheads and whiteheads while also calming inflammation.
What are these magical ingredients you ask?
AHAs are a group of acids that gently and evenly loosen the bonds between dead skin cells so that they can be exfoliated, while also encouraging healthy cellular turnover. Examples of Alpha Hydroxy Acids are Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic, Malic, Citric and Tartaric Acid. Glycolic and Lactic Acid are by far the most popular and recognised of the six because of their proven track record and efficiency to retexturise the skin. AHAs help manage break-outs because a build-up of dead skin when combined with excess oil and bacteria, can lead to pimples and blackheads. When you eliminate the build-up of dead skin, you then eliminate at least one of the factors that contribute to break-outs.
BHAs are the second group of acids that help prevent and treat breakouts. Beta Hydroxy Acids have the unique ability to go into the pore where it unclogs and exfoliates the pore from within. Salicylic Acid is the most widely used BHA in skincare products and because it also has a soothing and anti-inflammatory action it’s safe to use on even the most sensitive skins.
The ZO® Skin Health Complexion Clearing Program is designed with products that contain essential ingredients that slow down sebum activity and break down surface oils. These products also exfoliate dead skin cells to help repair surface damage, minimise pores and improve skin texture. The Complexion Clearing Program is a complete line of highly effective products that address clogged pores, comedones, pimples and cysts for clearer and smoother skin.
When we struggle with break-outs we also tend to skip sun protection, thinking that it might clog our pores and add more oil to our skin. Fortunately, Colorescience® has two products that can help protect your skin against the harmful UV rays that cause skin damage, while also minimising oil. The Colorescience® Mattifying Protector Face Primer SPF 20 can be applied after you’ve applied your moisturiser to create a smooth mattified appearance while also protecting your skin from sun damage. It’s formulated with physical sun protectors- Titanium and Zinc Oxide- that reflect sun rays, while ingredients such as Salicylic Acid and Hydrolysed Oats Protein, address oiliness. You can also use the Colorescience® Sunforgettable Brush-On Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 after applying your make-up and throughout the day to control shine and protect your skin.
